The Heber Valley Historic Railroad will roll out on a journey Thursday afternoon at 1:00 p.m and 11:00 a.m. Friday. Top entertainers from around the country will be performing on the train. Every fifteen minutes the performers will switch cars. Hilarious entertainment will be in store, as well as beautiful scenery, for a great time on the train. So, put on your cowboy duds and go back in time on the rails of The Cowboy Poetry Train.
In the fall of 1899 the first train made its way up the canyon from Provo, Utah to a little settlement called Heber. For decades the railroad served the people of this tiny community hauling freight into the valley and livestock out. In the late 1930s and early 1940s more sheep were transported out of the Heber Valley than anywhere in the nation. Naturally they traveled by rail.
When the new highway was completed, rail traffic gave way to trucks and in 1967 the rails fell silent. The line was abandoned by the Denver & Rio Grande Western because of declining business. In 1970 the train became a recreational railroad and except for a brief pause between 1990 and 1993 trains have operated continuously along the scenic rail line.
The Fall of 1999 the railroad line was 100 years old. Come and enjoy Utah's oldest steam railroad.
The train is pulled by the restored 1907 steam driven #618, which took two years to restore. The cars are all restored 1920s era coach cars, plus a few open-air cars to allow passengers to fully appreciate Mother Nature.
